Project Background and Need Served:
The NOAH Project, one of our Ministry Jubilee Projects, is an initiative of Central Church in Detroit. This historic church community’s commitment to ameliorating the desperate conditions of the jobless, working poor, seniors, single parents, and homeless population in central city Detroit is exemplified in the efforts of the NOAH Project -Networking, Organizing, and Advocating of Health- a collaborative effort with Family Service, Inc. This program networks with other community-based organizations to link, when necessary, its clients to more than 25 agencies for additional mental health needs, counseling, social work services, health needs (prescriptions, assessments, emergency care, substance abuse), clothing, food, meals and shelter that extend beyond its service limitations. The NOAH staff includes a nurse practitioner, a social worker, and cases worker. Networking (well developed lines with established organizations) enables the Church and project staff to address the root causes of familial and individual struggles.
The results of this program’s operations have earned (regional, tri-county, statewide) recognition for its ability to successfully impact the needs of community, and, in turn, have garnered support for its efforts from individuals, community-based groups, and churches of all denominations.
FUMC has been supporting the NOAH Project by providing sandwiches in support its mid-day meal and bag lunch program for two years. In addition to serving the mid-day meal, NOAH provides a bag lunch as a means for additional nourishment during the later part of the day since most recipients do not have access to any other nourishment during the later part of the day. The bag lunch may include healthy snack foods and fruits that are individually packages.
Outreach Project Purpose:
Our plans are to provide sandwiches twice during the fiscal year. We have prepared 400 ham, ham/cheese, and turkey and delivered them to the church’s facility the same day. We have purchased quality, brand name, foods and individual packaging goods at reasonable costs. It generally takes an hour to purchase the food contents and 4-6 volunteers two hours for 4-6 volunteers to make the sandwiches.
