 HOW TO HELP ON SUNDAYS

Sunday morning worship services don’t magically happen... we need your help.

Please consider making a small commitment of time to assist with these vital hospitality tasks — it will make a world of difference to everyone who works through our door!

Downtown Sunday Worship Preparations

Greeter
Serve once a month to pass out warm handshakes, friendly smiles, and general direction as needed to the congregation and visitors as they enter the church on Sunday mornings. Greeters are needed 15 minutes before the 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. services each Sunday. Each greeter would serve one or more Sundays a month. With interest in making First Church warm and welcoming, please contact Nancy Lynn: nancy@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536.

Welcome Center Attendant
If you enjoy welcoming and helping others in an active environment this may be the right spot for you! The welcome center attendant helps to answer questions about the church, hand out printed informational materials, assist with nametags, and provide direction to meetings taking place that day. Every weekend will be different and exciting! Attendants would cover one of three different shifts each Sunday morning: (A) 9-9:40 a.m., (B) 10:30-11:25 a.m., (C) 12-12:30 p.m.  Each welcome center attendant would serve one or more Sundays a month. If you have a heart for sharing the ministry of First Church with others, please contact Nancy Lynn: nancy@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536.

Tour Guide
Here’s a way to meet people and provide information about church ministry. As a tour guide, you would guide interested newcomers around the church building after worship, sharing information about the various ministries and history of the church. You might be the first person a newcomer talks to — you can put a friendly face on a confusing building and help connect someone with one or more parts of our multi-faceted ministry. If you are interested in this growing ministry, please contact Jim Higdon: higdonaa@comcast.net | 734-761-1237

Usher
Join our usher team, volunteering with a smile once a month (or more) at one of the Sunday worship services. This important ministry involves handing out bulletins, directing congregants to seats, and passing the offering plates during worship. Training is provided. If you have a heart for assisting people and helping them feel welcome in worship, this is the job for you! Please let us know you are interested in joining an usher team by contacting Jim Danforth: custodian@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536

Worship Attendant
Provide pre-service support to the clergy (and to the Worship Committee Communion Coordinator on first Sundays) by placing candles on the altar, placing altar flowers, lighting candles on summer Sundays, putting out offering baskets on Communion Sundays, adjusting furniture between first and second services, and other set-up tasks as needed. With interest, please contact Tina Alee: tina@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536.

Communion Server
On first Sundays, our worship service includes the Sacrament of Communion. These volunteers serve the bread and juice to the congregation along with the clergy. With interest, please contact Sue Seitz: sueseitz@comcast.net | 734-995-0547

Lay Lector
If you enjoy reading scripture during worship, we would welcome your assistance as a Lay Lector during a 9:30 a.m. worship service. The scripture is sent out via email the week prior with full instruction. With interest, please contact Adele Roy: adele@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536

Acolyte
Children ages 8 through 11 are invited to serve as acolytes during our Sunday morning 9:30 a.m. worship services. Two acolytes serve together at a service.
The duties of an acolyte include processing with the choir, lighting the candles on the altar, and extinguishing and storing the candle lighters. Full training is provided. With interest, please contact Marcie Austerberry: vid_mla73@hotmail.com | 734-769-6158

Sound Technician/Video Technician
We are looking for a few good souls that are passionate about providing lights, sound, and video for Sunday morning worship services. Training is provided for this growing ministry. With interest, please contact Marcia DeBoer: deboer.me@gmail.com | 734-995-0085

Traditional Musician
Our traditional music ministry provides music leadership for our 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship services. There are many opportunities to get involved! Please review our music web page for detailed information on groups, their focus, and their rehearsal schedules. With questions or interest, please contact Ann Marie Koukios: annmarie@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536 x25

Behind the Scenes Support

Worship Committee
As part of the Worship Committee, you would help to plan and put in place major seasonal displays in the sanctuary, in preparation for liturgical worship seasons. On a monthly basis, communion elements are prepared for downtown worship by a sub-group of this committee. With interest, please contact Barb Higdon: 734-761-1237

FUMC Reporter/Photographer
Join the church team as a reporter/writer/photographer, writing articles and shooting photos for our publications and website. You will be provided assignments, contacts, and story ideas. This opportunity offers a flexible time commitment, and will be scheduled by project deadlines. With interest, contact Adele Roy: adele@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536.

Pew Pocket Monitor
Be a part of this critical team of dedicated "stuffers"!  Serve once a month (either alone or with friends at your convenience during the week) and make sure our sanctuary pew pockets are filled with prayer cards, communication cards, offering envelopes, pens, and other literature as necessary. With interest, contact Barb Baily: bbaily16@sbcglobal.net | 734-668-1462.

Bulletin Collator
Each Friday morning the individual sheets comprising the bulletin are collated and distributed by a rotating group of people. Think of this as time to catch up with a friend while shuffling papers into place – and fulfilling a critical need each week! With interest, please contact Tina Alee: tina@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536.

Fellowship Time between Sunday Worship Services

September-May: Connections Food Team
Each week, a different team or group or family provides some combination of fruit, cookies, crackers, and cheese for our “Connections” fellowship time in the social hall between worship services. With interest, please contact Marcie Austerberry: vid_mla73@hotmail.com | 734-769-6158.

September-May: World Peace Cafe Drinks Team
Many church members have expressed strong interest in seeing FUMC support a living wage for coffee workers and environmentally sound practices with our weekly hot-drinks habits. Joining a World Peace Cafe Drinks team means you might serve just 7 - 8 times during the year with the same set of folks each time. One hour on Sunday mornings. With interest, please contact Ruth Ann Church: ruth.church@sbcglobal.net | 734-717-6278

June-August: Lemonade on the Lawn Host
Prepare lemonade, pitchers of water, and provide trays of cookies for the congregation to enjoy after worship on Summer Sundays. Specific requirements are outlined in full on our website. With interest, please contact Tina Alee in the month of May: tina@fumc-a2.org | 734-662-4536.
