If you’re reading this in the pew on Sunday morning, we hope you came hungry to church! All are invited to join Leadership Council in the Social Hall for a free breakfast and a preview of activities coming for adults, youth, and families this fall. Childcare is available! See where God’s spirit is moving us at FUMC. (Scrip and Coffee bean sales will take place just outside the church office this Sunday morning.)
Have you ever avoided someone because you couldn’t remember that person’s name? Do you think someone has avoided you for the same reason? Nametags take care of that problem! Please wear one to worship this summer — you might meet someone new and make a friend or two! Stickers available at the door at Green Wood and at the West entry (off the parking lot) downtown.
Attention Faith and Food Home Vegetable Gardeners and Supporters! Drop off of home-grown veggies takes place at Green Wood on Wednesdays from 4-6 pm. Look for a red and white cooler under the tree near the FUMC Faith and Food Garden. Place vegetables in the cooler and we will deliver them to Food Gatherers.
It’s August — school is just around the corner...and there are some back to school Buy It Now cards available for a limited time! Wesley needs you! We are creating a data base of people interested in being contacted to help with Wesley — bake cookies, home visits, help with lunches, rides, etc. If you are able, please contact Karla Paterson, at
karlapaterson@gmail.com or 662-2745 to be put on the call list as needs arise. Our first Wesley Care activity is baking cookies for Sun., Sep. 12 to give to students visiting our church.
Business Reply Envelopes & Lanyards — Thank you very much from the Youth Ministry for all the donations of business reply envelopes. We now have more than enough! We still collect lanyards from conferences and use them when we go on retreat or mission trips, so please keep dropping them off in the youth mailbox.
Interested in ushering? We need ushers at both services. You will be assigned to a team and usher every other month. Teenagers and college students are welcome. Please call the church office with interest. This is a simple way to give your time and talent to the Lord!
Office Hours — Faith Community Nurse. Beginning Tue., Sep. 14, our Faith Community Nurse, Jocelyn Burkhead, will be holding weekly office hours from 11:30am - 3pm in the former Wesley office on the top floor (to the left as you exit the elevator). She will be available each Tuesday during those hours to answer health questions, check blood pressures, or just listen regarding concerns. These times are planned to allow those who have attended morning meetings or events to stop in afterwards, or for folks coming for the afternoon to plan a visit beforehand.
The International Student Picnic will again be prepared by our congregation in cooperation with the Ecumenical Center and International Residence. The picnic will be Sun., Sept. 12. In recent years we have served more than 200 students at this event. If you would like to bake cookies or brownies, contribute money towards the purchase of other food, help in food preparation on Sept. 11, or help with the set up, serving, or clean up on Sept. 12, call Nona Church, 998-4798.
Don’t get towed from the church! Please remember that your car must be logged in on the clipboard at the church office when you park downtown during office hours or there is a very real risk that it will be towed. The parking lot is always reserved for those who are at the church on church business.
The next Kenya Mission Trip is scheduled for February 17 - 28, 2011. Details and an application form are available on the church web site. The registration deadline is Sep. 30. Limited space is available so register early. Questions may be directed to any of the trip leaders: Gary McClusky (

Isn’t it convenient? No checks, no stamps. Those who already use online banking enjoy the scheduling and sending features that save time and effort each month. You can arrange one-time or recurring gifts to the church through your own banking website, or you may go to our website and set up a transaction.

Please save the date! The 2010 Cabaret, “The Soundz of Music,” will be held the evening of Fri., Oct. 1. Don’t miss it! A major fundraising part of our Cabaret is the silent auction that takes place in Wesley Lounge. Auction items are donated by our congregation and friends. Examples of items donated in past years include: hand made jewelry, crafts, art work, antiques of value. This year we hope to expand on that and be even more creative. Perhaps you have a set of tickets to an event that you cannot use. How about:
- introductory lessons in your area of specialty – computers, piano-organ-string-wind-percussion-voice, bridge, quilting-knitting-crochet (just in time to make gifts for the church Christmas giving tree), cooking, sketching-drawing-painting, matting and framing, and many more
- a music performance at the winner’s special gathering
These are just a few of the many new items and services that could be added to make our auction even more exciting. Use your imagination and help with a special donation just from you. We appreciate and thank you in advance for your support! For more information contact either: Marilyn Chasteen,
mrchasteen@gmail.com, 747-9356, or Pat Arno,
p.arno@comcast.net, 665-0269.
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Changes at House by the Side of the Road — As of July 23, the center is closed. The old location will be vacated and the inventory stored. We are looking for a new home. Congregations will be notified when a new space is located and we are open for business once again.
Please do not respond to email you receive asking for support through the United Methodist Church of Pakistan. There is no bishop or annual conference recognized as part of The United Methodist Church in the nation of Pakistan. You can give to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) to respond to the desperate need in that region. Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe damage, displacement, and disease in Pakistan, affecting about 20 million people. UMCOR is responding by providing clean drinking water, food, temporary shelter, and medical aid to tens of thousands of people in collaboration with Church of Pakistan, Church World Service, and GlobalMedic. To help, go to
www.UMCOR.org, or write a check to FUMC with “Advance #982450” in the memo. Give to UMCOR with confidence that 100% of your donation goes directly toward assistance.
Arbor Hospice offers many grief support groups that will begin new sessions in the next month. Explore their website for options that might help you or a friend negotiate a difficult time —
