In a normal winter, Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC) runs out of space in the Delonis Center and has relied on local congregations to open their buildings to provide room for homeless people to spend nights. With Pandemic conditions, SAWC has reduced the number of beds from 100 down to 50, and more overflow space than ever is needed for the increasing unhoused population. First Baptist Church, our next door neighbor, will be hosting an overnight sleeping space for the month of December. They will welcome additional volunteers to assist their congregation’s members. During the evenings, from 7 p.m. to midnight, two volunteers are needed. Overnight, from midnight to 7 a.m., one volunteer should be onsite to accompany a staffer from the shelter who will be there.
