Our First United Methodist Cooperative Nursery (FUMCN) Preschool is a caring, stimulating, and secure place for children to learn and grow. We encourage creative thinking and provide opportunities for problem solving to help expand your child’s mind. At FUMCN, children learn by doing. Using a wide variety of materials, they touch, taste, smell, look, and listen. Our emphasis is on learning through play and social interaction.
Parental participation is integral to this learning process. At FUMCN we aim to enhance the parents’ understanding of their children and to develop better parent-child relationships. Most experts agree that involvement in your child’s education greatly increases the likelihood of your child developing high self-esteem. An added benefit for parents is the contact with other parents, with whom you can share the joys and concerns of child rearing. The opportunity for forming friendships exists not just for the children, but for the parents as well.
Our teaching philosophy centers on a developmentally appropriate curriculum with a focus on free choice and play. With input from parents, the teacher plans the program and creates imaginative and fun activities that encourage the children to be curious and creative. Field trips are also an integral part of our curriculum. Our teacher, Juli Miettinen, annually attends conferences and classes to stay current with educational trends.
FUMCN is church-sponsored and Christian in philosophy; however, families of all religion backgrounds are welcome.
THE FUMCN – FIRST CHURCH CONNECTION
In the early 1960s First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor established FUMCN as an outreach to the community. As a program of the church, FUMCN does not rent space, or pay for utilities or janitorial services. The school is insured under the church policy. The school is fully licensed by the State Department of Social Services.
From the very beginning, FUMCN has been open to all students of any race, creed, sex, nationality, or ethnic origin. But more than that, FUMCN is designed to reflect the diversity of our community. Diversity is welcomed, encouraged, and needed.
FUMCN builds relationships between the church and the community, and between people of different faiths, economic levels, and experiences. Our Christian philosophy encourages relationships, understanding, and compassion. We acknowledge Christian holidays, principles, and prayer.
In a culture that often puts families last, FUMCN and First United Methodist Church put the family first. Families are encouraged to share their culture, heritage, and lifestyles, recognizing that everyone is a part of the family of God.
It’s the nature of United Methodists to be inclusive: “Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors.”
