The L.O.V.E. Thy Neighbor program is a local outreach of FUMC to address a need for weekend meals among hungry people in our community, some of whom are literally at our church’s doorstep every day. Every Saturday morning – 52 weeks a year — we provide non-perishable lunch supplies, pop-top ready-to-eat canned foods, and boxed juices / bottled water to those in need of food assistance.
For the convenience of our guests, we distribute food in conjunction with the St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program – an outreach which people have been able to count on for free and nutritious hot daily breakfast for over 3 decades. Folks are able to eat breakfast and pack lunch items for later in the weekend, all in one stop. Typically, we distribute lunch items to 80 – 125 individuals each week and many take food back to family members who cannot attend the breakfast.
People can help in one of three ways: volunteer, donate food, or support the program financially. L.O.V.E. Thy Neighbor is a great way to connect with local people both within FUMC and in the wider community.
Friday evening volunteers help make PB&J sandwiches and repack bulk foods for that week’s distribution. Saturday morning volunteers help distribute food during the St. Andrew’s Breakfast (and are often also needed to help transport the food between FUMC and St. Andrew’s). No experience is necessary and we welcome new volunteers to join us any week! There is always an experienced team lead present to show new volunteers what they need to do. Both Fridays and Saturdays offer a great way to serve and support people in need in our own community. Sign up on your own, with a friend, or with a family member. We’d love to have you!
