Love Thy Neighbor

Love Thy Neighbor (LTN) was started in 2008 as an outreach of First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor (FUMC) to meet the need for meals among hungry people – the homeless and the working poor – in Ann Arbor. Every morning, 52 weeks a year, LTN provides non-perishable, pop-top ready-to-eat canned foods, snacks and nutrition drinks to the food insecure guests of the St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program. Your help and donations are crucial to our ability to continue our work!

About

Guests who receive food from LTN are of all ages. Some are homeless; some have housing but, without food assistance, could have to choose between paying bills and having enough to eat. Some are struggling with addiction, mental illness or chronic health conditions. All are dealing with difficult circumstances.

LTN is a member of the Food Gatherers Partner Program Network. This allows us to purchase food, at reduced prices, from their warehouse. Additional food needed for our distribution is donated by individuals or purchased at bulk food warehouses at discounted prices.

Please contact us to learn about upcoming food collections or coordinate a drop off.

Donate

Help fund LTN! Donations are crucial to our ability to continue our work. LTN operates year round and costs approximately $12,000 annually. Your donation is tax deductible. If you donate online, you have the option to make a one-time or recurring donation to our program. Donate online here. You may also donate via check by mailing it to FUMC (120 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48103) or placing it in the weekly collection plate at service. Be sure to notate “Love Thy Neighbor” on the memo line.

Suggested Giving Levels

  • One to-go bag: $5
  • To-go bags for five people: $25
  • One week of the LTN program: $230
  • One month of the LTN program: $1,000

Food Collection

Food donations help us stretch our budget. We welcome donations of pull-top, ready-to-eat canned foods! Because many of our guests are homeless, we are asking for cans that have pull top lids only and do not require a can opener.

Desired foods:
  • Chef Boyardee canned ready-to-eat meals with a pull top lid
  • Pop-top cans of ready-to-eat soup
  • Star Kist, Bumble Bee (or other) tuna snack kits
  • Pop-top cans or packets of tuna or chicken
  • Small boxes of raisins or fruit chews
  • Individual packages of mixed nuts/trail mix
  • Ramen noodles
  • Chocolate or vanilla Ensure nutrition drink
  • Individual pudding cups
  • Individual snack packs of cookies

We encourage you to participate in our First Weekend Food Drive by bringing food donations on the first weekend of each month. You may also place donations in the collection bins near the FUMC church office at any time or in Green Wood’s collection bin.

If you don’t attend services in person, the church office is open M-F from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for drop off. Also, LTN volunteers are at church on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 9–10:30 a.m.
