In our first fall worship series, “The Vows We Take”, we’re looking at our baptismal/membership vows — the basic instructions for how to be disciples of Christ and living like Jesus in the context of empire. We’ll explore the meaning of each vow, put it into more contemporary language, and apply it to life in our context today.

Sometime the thought of representing something is too big — what if we get it wrong, or it gets itself wrong, or we don’t want to represent that idea. So if we promise to represent Christ and be faithful to the church, what about the days when that doesn’t seem like a great idea? Matthew’s version of the Sermon on the Mount invites us to rethink what, exactly, it means to represent something, and how much power we have to do so.
